Explore Japan: Japan’s Postwar Economic Development and Air Pollution – Learning from the Experience of Yokkaichi

Japan saw rapid economic growth from the mid-1950s, and the pollution accompanied the economic growth. We will learn how economic growth caused pollution and how Yokkaichi city tried to control pollution and keep economic growth. We will visit the center “Yokkaichi Pollution and Environmental Miraikan” and talk to some experts. Then, we will observe a typical industrial complex in Yokkaichi by bus tour.

During the 1970s, Japan witnessed a surge in public nuisance litigation. There were four major public nuisance litigation: (1) Yokkaichi Asthma Lawsuit (Yokkaichi, Mie Prefecture), (2) Itai-itai Disease Lawsuit (Toyama Prefecture), (3) Minamata Disease Lawsuit (Kumamoto and Kagoshima Prefectures), and (4) Niigata Minamata Disease Lawsuit (Niigata Prefecture).
We will visit the center that reproduces a classroom of a primary school, displays historical records & documents, and show videos. Some experts and city officers will introduce you to the incident and the efforts by the community, the industry, and the local government. Professor Akio Morishima who worked for the plaintiffs will join the tour and give remarks about the litigation and the efforts to control the pollution.
